How the science of injury prevention contributes to advancing home fire safety in the USA: successes and opportunities
TLDR
Most of the evidence-supported interventions were focused on changing the policy and community environments to prevent home fires and reduce injury when a fire occurs, and future prevention efforts should give high priority to addressing the continued disparities in home fire deaths.

A 3-year project to evaluate two methods of promoting residential smoke alarm installation and maintenance in high risk households across the U.S. resulted in working smoke alarms in 90% of households receiving the direct installation intervention and only 65% of voucher households had functioning alarms at follow up, largely due to failure to redeem vouchers.

TLDR
This work convened experts in the behavioral aspects of smoke alarms who reviewed the constructs and determined that the appropriate areas for behavioral focus were formulating, practicing, and implementing escape plans should an alarm sound and incorporated the constructs into a behavioral model for use in burn-prevention programs.
