}Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is an occupational hazard for a percentage of health care staff. Nine hundred and seventy staff members attending the Occupational Health Department at Cork University Hospital took part in the survey. A latex agglutination assay was used to determine the health care workers immune status to VZV. Of the 970 workers tested, 928 (95.7%) were immune to VZV. The sensitivity, specificity and predictive value of an enquiry regarding a history of chicken-pox was determined…

The varicella-zoster virus seroprevalence among new employees was low, posing an important risk to existing employees and patients, and positive or negative history of chickenpox was an unreliable indicator of susceptibility among healthcare workers of different nationalities.

The prevalence of VZV seropositivity was very high in this sample of Flemish healthcare workers, and a positive history of varicella was a good predictor of immunity, but a negative history had no value as a predictor of susceptibility in adults.

These data confirm that screening and vaccination of susceptible healthcare workers is essential regardless of age, and that not all healthcare workers born before 1957 were immune to these vaccine-preventable diseases.

The results show that a positive history of VZV is associated with positive seroprevalence but can not be a reliable indicator of the immunity, therefore, serological screening should be considered for all the HCWs.
