An important user of hydrographic sur­ veys done by Hydrographic Offices tra­ ditionally has been nautical cartogra­ phy. Hydrographic surveys are required for chart production. But the tasks of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) are not limited to naviga­ tion. Their scope is wide and continues to expand (e.g. CZM, coastal protection, coastal engineering).
