Endocarditis is a rare and highly variable disease, with a dramatic mortality that has not improved significantly despite progress in diagnosis and treatment. Strategies for prevention and management have generally been based on relatively small, usually single-center, experiences or, in the case of prophylaxis guidelines, been extrapolated from animal models of disease.
