@article{Loth2020SurfaceRI, title={Surface roughness in finite element meshes}, author={Fabian Loth and Thomas Kiel and Kurt Busch and Philip Tr{\o}st Kristensen}, journal={arXiv: Computational Physics}, year={2020} }
We present a practical approach for constructing meshes of general rough surfaces with given autocorrelation functions based on the unstructured meshes of nominally smooth surfaces. The approach builds on a well-known method to construct correlated random numbers from white noise using a decomposition of the autocorrelation matrix. We discuss important details arising in practical applications to the physicalmodeling of surface roughness and provide a software implementation to enable use of…

Numerical simulation methods for rough surface scattering
- Computer Science
- 2001
An overview of rough surface scattering and application areas of current interest is provided, and research in numerical simulation methods for both one- and two-dimensional surfaces is surveyed.
Rough surfaces: gaussian or exponential statistics?

- Engineering
- 2008
Gmsh is an open‐source 3‐D finite element grid generator with a build‐in CAD engine and post‐processor. Its design goal is to provide a fast, light and user‐friendly meshing tool with parametric…
Characterization of the Effect of Surface Roughness and Texture on Fluid Flow: Past, Present, and Future (Keynote)
- Environmental Science
- 2005
That surface roughness has an effect on fluid flow in networks has been understood for well over a century. The exact effect roughness has on fluid flow has not been completely understood, but a…
Fast exact and approximate geodesics on meshes
- Computer ScienceSIGGRAPH '05
- 2005
To compute the shortest path between two given points, a lower-bound property of the approximate geodesic algorithm is used to efficiently prune the frontier of the MMP algorithm, thereby obtaining an exact solution even more quickly.
Surface roughness: A review of its measurement at micro-/nano-scale

Abstract The measurement of surface roughness at micro-/nano-scale is of great importance to metrological, manufacturing, engineering, and scientific applications given the critical roles of…
Monte Carlo Calculation for Electromagnetic-Wave Scattering from Random Rough Surfaces
- Physics
- 1984
A Monte Carlo calculation for light intensities scattered from a random Gaussian-correlated surface is presented for the first time. It is shown that small randomness on a grating surface can…
The absorption of light by rough metal surfaces—A three-dimensional ray-tracing analysis
- Physics
- 2008
The laser absorptance of rough surfaces has been investigated by using Monte Carlo simulations based on three-dimensional (3D) ray tracing. The influence of multiple scattering, shadowing, and the…
