In this article, we shall attempt to survey current knowledge about the supramedullary pathways that influence swallowing. While the swallowing reflex has attracted the attention of many investigators (for review of literature, see Doty, 1968), the role played by suprabulbar regions of the brain on this synergy has received scant attentian in recent years.
