Suppurative mediastinitis occurred in 68 of 9,965 patients (0.7 percent) who underwent median sternotomy at Emory University Hospital from 1973 through 1982. Case-control methodology was used to identify preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative risk factors for the development of poststernotomy mediastinitis.
