Work was performed at the Endocrinology Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda Maryland to determine whether the combined administration of large doses of exogenous androgens and corticoids would completely inhibit endogenous androgen and estrogen secretion. 24-hour urine samples of 4 normal men aged 33-40 were studied for 13 consecutive days. From Days 6-10 subjects received 40 mg fluoxymesterone qd which was chosen to simulate excessive endogenous androgens. From Days 11-13…
ALTERATION OF HORMONE LEVELS IN NORMAL MALES GIVEN THE ANABOLIC STEROID STANOZOLOL
TLDR
Investigation of the effect of administering a 14 d course of stanozolol on a variety of important hormonal pathways in nine healthy male subjects found it to lead to a number of hormonal changes, probably by an action at both pituitary and hepatic levels.
CONTROL OF GONADOTROPHIN SECRETION BY STEROID HORMONES IN CASTRATED MALE TRANSSEXUALS. I. EFFECTS OF OESTRADIOL INFUSION ON PLASMA LEVELS OF FOLLICLE‐STIMULATING HORMONE AND LUTEINIZING HORMONE
TLDR
Observations are consistent with the conclusions that: (1) E2 plays a part in the regulation of secretion of FSH and LH in men; and (2) at doses higher than physiological, E2 exerts a differential effect on the secretion of E2 and LH.
Decreased Levothyroxine Requirement in Women with Hypothyroidism during Androgen Therapy for Breast Cancer
  • B. Arafah
  • Medicine
    Annals of Internal Medicine
  • 1994
TLDR
The study shows that as a result of androgen-induced reduction in circulating levels of T4-binding globulin, thyroid hormone replacement doses had to be decreased by 25% to 50% to achieve similar therapeutic response.
Plasma Estrogens in Childhood and Puberty under Physiologic and Pathologic Conditions
TLDR
The radioimmunologic method enables us to measure the low estrogen levels which are found in children, and did not find higher levels in 29 adolescents with gynecomastia than in normal adolescents at the same stage of puberty.
Androgen deprivation by adrenal suppression using low-dose hydrocortisone for the treatment of breast carcinoma with apocrine features: a case report illustrating this new paradigm
TLDR
It is reported on a postmenopausal patient with a secondary metastatic apocrine breast cancer successfully treated with low-dose hydrocortisone only following several lines of chemotherapy, demonstrating that an AR-expressing apocrine cancer may respond to androgen deprivation, as an ER-positive breast cancer may benefit from estrogen deprivation.
Virilismus bei Nebennierenmarktumor mit ektopischem ACTH-Syndrom
TLDR
The case of a 14-year-old girl with hirsutism and virilism due to the secretion of ectopic ACTH by an adrenal medullary tumor is described, and an adrenogenital syndrome was excluded.
8 Endocrine laboratory findings in pubertal disturbances
Summary Determinations of plasma gonadotropins and sex steroid levels are invaluable in the study of pubertal physiology and pathology. Sensitivity of the assays is frequently insufficient to
Glucocorticoids and prostate cancer treatment: friend or foe?
TLDR
Historical and contemporary use of glucocorticoids in the treatment of prostate cancer are examined, potential mechanisms by which they may inhibit or drive prostate cancer growth are reviewed, and potential means of defining their contribution to the biology of prostatecancer are described.
Androgen Therapy in an "excessively" tall boy.
TLDR
An "excessively" tall, early pubertal boy was treated with androgen and sexual development and fusion of epiphyses was accelerated with achievement of shorter stature than that predicted prior to therapy.
