The application of operations research OR at TNT Express during the past seven years has significantly improved decision-making quality and resulted in cost savings of 207 million euros. The global optimization GO program initiative has led to the development of a suite of optimization solutions to assist the operating units of TNT Express to improve their package delivery in road and air networks. To create and deploy these solutions, we established communities of practice CoPs, at which…

Optimizing package express operations in China

Crew Management in Passenger Rail Transport

It is shown that introducing decision support can give substantial improvements in the overall performance of a railway company and reduce the number of cancelled trains and fewer trains will be delayed in case of unforeseen disruptions.

State of the Practice: A Review of the Application of OR/MS in Freight Transportation

The state of the practice in OR and freight transportation is described, highlighting recent successful and widely used analytical techniques in oceanic transportation and port operations, and barge, freight rail, intermodal, truck load, less than truckload, and air freight transportation, as well as the use of OR techniques in third-party logistics.

Planning of Container Crossdocking for an Express Shipment Service Network

In air transportation, container crossdocking refers to a loaded container that is transferred at an airport from an incoming flight to an outgoing flight without handling the freight on the

Back in business: operations research in support of big data analytics for operations and supply chain management

This paper examines both applied and scholarly applications of OR-based big data analytical tools and techniques within an operations and supply chain management context to highlight their future potential in this domain.

UN World Food Programme: Toward Zero Hunger with Analytics

Each year, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) provides food assistance to around 100 million people in more than 80 countries. Significant investments over the last decade have put

AWARENESS, APPRECIATION AND FAMILIARITY WITH OPERATIONS RESEARCH AMONG MANAGERS IN QUOTED MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN NIGERIA

Unconscious or informal application and failure to acknowledge the use of operations research (OR) approach by corporate managers has been going on globally for a very long time. This largely

Air Network Design for Express Shipment Service

This paper describes the express shipment service design problem faced by a carrier and presents a model and column generation approach for its solution, which can find near optimal air service designs for a fixed aircraft fleet or for a fleet of unspecified size and make-up.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Optimizes Vehicle Routes for Efficient Product Delivery

In 2004 and 2005, Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) implemented ORTEC's vehicle-routing software and has realized an annual cost saving of $45 million and major improvements in customer service.

Enriching the tactical network design of express service carriers with fleet scheduling characteristics

A new tactical network design model is proposed that is able to include fleet scheduling characteristics (like vehicle capacities, vehicle balancing, and drivers’ legislations) in the network design, resulting in significant cost reductions.

Composite Variable Formulations for Express Shipment Service Network Design

A new approach to solving the express shipment service network design problem by removing flow decisions as explicit decisions and establishing that its linear programming relaxation gives stronger lower bounds than conventional approaches is described.

A novel modeling approach for express package carrier planning

This work proposes a model in which variables represent combinations of loads and their corresponding routings, rather than assigning individual loads to individual arcs in the network, and shows how the use of templates, in place of traditional delayed column generation, allows to identify promising candidate variables, ensuring high‐quality solutions in reasonable run times.

The Truck Dispatching Problem

A procedure based on a linear programming formulation is given for obtaining a near optimal solution to the optimum routing of a fleet of gasoline delivery trucks between a bulk terminal and a large number of service stations supplied by the terminal.

The vehicle routing problem

The Vehicle Routing Problem covers both exact and heuristic methods developed for the VRP and some of its main variants, emphasizing the practical issues common to VRP. The book is composed of three

Route Planning in Road Networks

This book addresses students, researchers, and software developers that are interested in car navigation systems, route planning services, logistics, or any other application where route planning in road networks plays a crucial role.

Solving set partitioning problems using lagrangian relaxation

This thesis focuses on the set partitioning problem. Given a collection of subsets of a certain root set and costs associated to these subsets, the set partitioning problem is the problem of finding
