In these two lectures, delivered at the XXXVII Karpacz Winter School, February 2001, I review some applications of superspace in various topics related to string theory and M-theory. The first lecture is mainly devoted to descriptions of brane dynamics formulated in supergravity backgrounds. The second lecture concerns the use of superspace techniques for determining consistent interactions in supersymmetric gauge theory and supergravity, e.g., α′-corrections from string/M-theory.In these two…

Spinorial cohomology and maximally supersymmetric theories
- Physics
- 2001
Fields in supersymmetric gauge theories may be seen as elements in a spinorial cohomology. We elaborate on this subject, specialising to maximally supersymmetric theories, where the superspace…
Supersymmetric corrections to eleven-dimensional supergravity
- Physics
- 2005
In this paper we study eleven-dimensional supergravity in its most general form. This is done by implementing manifest supersymmetry (and Lorentz invariance) through the use of the geometric (torsion…
Pure spinors and D=6 super-Yang-Mills
- Physics
- 2008
Pure spinor cohomology has been used to describe maximally supersymmetric theories, like D=10 super-Yang-Mills and D=11 supergravity. Supersymmetry closes on-shell in such theories, and the fields in…
On a supersymmetric completion of the R 4 term in IIB supergravity
- Mathematics, Physics
- 2003
We analyze the possibility of constructing a supersymmetric invariant that contains the $R^4$ term among its components as a superpotential term in type IIB on-shell superspace. We consider a scalar…
From supergeometry to pure spinors
- Physics
- 2010
In this talk, we review how the superspace formulation of maximally
supersymmetric field theories (including supergravity) naturally leads to
introduction of pure spinors and pure spinor…
Loop amplitudes in maximal supergravity with manifest supersymmetry
- Geology, Physics
- 2013
A bstractWe present a description for amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravities obtained by dimensional reduction from D = 11, derived from a field theory point of view using the pure spinor…

We present a description for amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravities obtained by dimensional reduction from D = 11, derived from a field theory point of view using the pure spinor formalism. The…
Pure spinor superfields - an overview
- Physics
- 2013
Maximally supersymmetric theories do not allow off-shell superspace formulations with traditional superfields containing a finite set of auxiliary fields. It has become clear that off-shell…
Pure spinor superfields, with application to D=3 conformal models
- Physics
- 2009
I review and discuss the construction of supersymmetry multiplets and manifestly supersymmetric Batalin-Vilkovisky actions using pure spinors, with emphasis on models with maximal supersymmetry. The…
Supersymmetric completion of the R 4 term in type IIB supergravity
- Physics
- 2005
We examine the question of the supersymmetric completion of the R{sup 4} term in type IIB supergravity by using superfield methods. We show that, while there is an obstruction to constructing the…

Generalised 11-Dimensional Supergravity
- Physics
- 2000
The low-energy effective dynamics of M-theory, eleven-dimensional supergravity, is taken off-shell in a manifestly supersymmetric superspace formulation. We show that a previously proposed relaxation…
Born-Infeld Action in String Theory
- Physics
- 1999
In this thesis I present applications of the Born-Infeld action to the description of D-branes, mostly in the context of type IIB string theory. First I present the Callan-Maldacena construction of a…
The Structure of Maximally Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory: Constraining Higher-Order Corrections
- Mathematics
- 2001
We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we…
BPS Branes in Supergravity
- Physics
- 1998
This review considers the properties of classical solutions to supergravity theories with partially unbroken supersymmetry. These solutions saturate Bogomol’ny-Prasad-Sommerfield bounds on their…
Born-Infeld action, supersymmetry and string theory
- Physics

We review and elaborate on some aspects of Born-Infeld action and its supersymmetric generalizations in connection with string theory. Contents: BI action from string theory; some properties of…
Curvature terms in D-brane actions and their M theory origin

We derive the complete (curvature)2 terms of effective D-brane actions, for arbitrary ambient geometries and world-volume embeddings, at lowest order (disk-level) in the string-loop expansion. These…

In the light of the duality between physics in the bulk of anti-de Sitter space and a conformal field theory on the boundary, we review the M2, D3 and M5 branes and how their near-horizon geometry…
