This thesis consists of an introductory text, which is divided into two parts, and six appended research papers. The first part contains a general discussion on conformal and superconformal symmetry in six dimensions, and treats how the corresponding transformations act on space-time and superspace fields. We specialize to the case with chiral (2,0) supersymmetry. A formalism is presented for incorporating these symmetries in a manifest way. The second part of the thesis concerns the so called…

Superconformal theories in three dimensions

This thesis consists of six chapters, more than half of which are introductory texts. The main content of the master thesis project is presented in section 3.3, chapter 5 and chapter 6. The problem

Chiral 2-form actions and their applications to M5-brane(s)

We study the symmetry and dynamics of M5-branes as well as chiral p-forms in this thesis. In the first part, we propose a model describing the gauge sector of multiple M5-branes. The model has

Free (2,0) Theory on a Circle Fibration

Using the geometry of a circle fibration the free (2,0) theory, a six dimensional superconformal field theory, is reduced to a five dimensional abelian Yang-Mills theory. The six dimensional theory

BPS surface observables in six-dimensional (2,0) theory

The supergroup OSp(8*|4), which is the superconformal group of (2,0) theory in six dimensions, is broken to the subgroup OSp(4|2)xOSp(4|2) by demanding the invariance of a certain product in a

Non-abelian action for multiple five-branes with self-dual tensors

A bstractWe construct an action for non-abelian 2-form in 6-dimensions. Our action consists of a non-abelian generalization of the abelian action of Perry and Schwarz for a single five-brane. It

Multiple self-dual strings on M5-branes

We show how to define Chern-Simons matter theories with boundary. Rather than imposing boundary conditions, we introduce new boundary degrees of freedom from the beginning and show how they can be

A class of six-dimensional conformal field theories

: We describe a class of six-dimensional conformal field theories that have some properties in common with and possibly are related to a subsector of the tensionless string theories. The latter

We argue that the fundamental Theory of Everything is a conventional field theory defined in the flat multidimensional bulk. Our Universe should be obtained as a 3-brane classical solution in this

The Large-N Limit of Superconformal Field Theories and Supergravity

We show that the large-N limits of certainconformal field theories in various dimensions includein their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes,

A class of 6D conformal field theories: relation to 4D superconformal Yang-Mills theories?

A class of six-dimensional conformal field theories that possibly are related to the tensionless string theories are described, with the A(N-1) theory arising by factoring out the collective "center of mass" degrees of freedom from N noninteracting chiral two-forms.

Scattering in D=5 super Yang-Mills theory and the relation to (2,0) theory

Compactifying the A{sub 1} version of (2,0) theory on a circle gives rise to five-dimensional, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In the Coulomb branch, where the SU(2) gauge group is

Manifestly conformally covariant field equations and a geometrical understanding of mass

In two previous papers we have shown that classical relativistic (spinning) particle theories may be written in terms of manifestly O(2,4)-invariant actions with a local O(2,1) symmetry. Conventional

Self-Dual Strings in Six Dimensions: Anomalies, the ADE-Classification, and the World-Sheet WZW-Model

We consider the (2,0) supersymmetric theory of tensor multiplets and self-dual strings in six space-time dimensions. Space-time diffeomorphisms that leave the string world-sheet invariant appear as

Orbifolds of M-theory
