To maintain a specific size, cells must coordinate their growth and division. Yeast cells are thought to use cell-size checkpoints to coordinate these two processes (Fantes and Cell-size checkpoints prevent passage through key cell-cycle transitions until cells have reached a critical size. In fission yeast, the critical size requirement is exerted primarily at the G2/M transition, whereas in budding yeast it is exerted primarily at the G1/S transition (Rupes, 2002).
