Autophagy is a process responsible for the bulk degradation of intracellular material that is evolutionarily conserved between all eukaryotes. In autophagy, cytoplasmic components are engulfed by double-membrane-bound structures (autophagosomes) and delivered to lysosomes/vacuoles for degradation.
