A coal-water slurry is an econonical substitute for premium liquid fuels, but the amount of sulfur in coal is usually higher than in petroleum liquids. Lime has been used to capture sulfur in fluidized coal combustion as CaSO4, but the latter decomposes above 1273 K. We report here on the possible capture of sulfur in the ash as CaS, which has higher thermal stability than CaSO4. This can be accomplished using a fuel-rich first stage in a coal-water slurry combustor, or under the conditions… Expand
SULFUR RECOVERY WITH REDUCED EMISSIONS, LOW CAPITAL INVESTMENT AND HYDROGEN CO-PRODUCTION
Abstract The main disadvantage of the Claus process is that by introducing air as oxidant a large volume of tail gas is produced. This must be treated to reduce atmospheric emissions ofExpand
Thermodynamic analysis of a fluidized-bed combustor
Abstract A paper previously published in this journal (Thermochim. Acta, 75 (1984) 9) analyzed the thermodynamics of reactions involved in the capture of sulfur by calcium carbonate in fluidized-bedExpand
Novel applications of reaction coupling: use of carbon dioxide to shift the equilibrium of dehydrogenation reactions
In industrial systems, strict thermodynamic coupling (as it is formally defined) is unlikely, particularly where catalysis is used. Equilibrium shifts may still be possible due to coupling betweenExpand

Abstract The fuel-rich combustion of coals containing calcium in various forms has been studied in a tubular downflow reactor to determine whether or not coal-bound sulfur can be efficiently retainedExpand
Combustion of calcium treated coals
The combustion of calcium-exchanged coals was studied in laminar flow and fluid bed reactors under strongly fuel-lean conditions. The purpose of the study was to understand the nature of release andExpand

A Fundamental Equation of State for Heavy Water
A fundamental equation of state has been formulated for heavy water in the form Ψ = Ψ(p,T) in which Ψ = Helmholtz free energyp = density T = thermodynamic temperature. The complete range of singleExpand
