Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is currently the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) is the primary factor associated with the COPD development. CS activates epithelial cells to secrete chemokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) that recruit neutrophils and macrophages to the lung.
