The degree of intent to commit suicide and the severity of self-injury were examined in individuals (N = 180) who had recently attempted suicide. Although a minimal association was found between the degree of suicide intent and the degree of lethality of the attempt, the accuracy of expectations about the likelihood of dying was found to moderate the relationship between suicide intent and lethality. Specifically, higher levels of suicide intent were associated with more lethal attempts but…

The Moderating Effects of Accurate Expectations of Lethality in the Relationships between Suicide Intent and Medical Lethality on Suicide Attempts
TLDR
The accuracy of expectations about the likelihood of dying was found to moderate the relationships between suicide intent and medical lethality.
Evaluating the predictive validity of suicidal intent and medical lethality in youth.
OBJECTIVES To examine whether suicidal intent and medical lethality of past suicide attempts are predictive of future attempts, the association between intent and lethality, and the consistency of
A review of "suicidal intent" within the existing suicide literature.
TLDR
A high degree of variability in the empirical measurement and analysis of suicide intent limits future research related to measuring suicidal risk and outcomes, reporting suicide intent, or the meaningful comparison of diagnostic approaches or treatments across multiple studies.
Characteristics of high intent suicide attempters admitted to a general hospital.
Clinical assessment of suicide risk and suicide attempters' self-reported suicide intent: A cross sectional study
TLDR
This study explored medical doctors’ clinical assessment of suicide risk and suicide attempters’ self-reported suicide intent and found the strongest predictor of suicide intent was habitual poor coping, followed by serious financial problems, and expressed regret.
Is There a Relationship between Suicidal Intent and Lethality in Deliberate Self‐Poisoning?
TLDR
Lethality and suicidal intent should be considered as largely separate dimensions of self‐harm and Clinicians should bear this in mind during clinical assessment, especially regarding historical information.
Prevalence of and risk factors for suicide attempts versus suicide gestures: analysis of the National Comorbidity Survey.
TLDR
It is possible and useful to distinguish between self-injurers on the basis of intent to die, and those whoSelf-injured not to die but to communicate with others, suicide gesturers, using data from the National Comorbidity Survey.

TLDR
There were trends for young women whose suicide attempts resulted in the greatest risk to life to be of high socio-economic status; to have had less history of violence, both used and sustained; to more often demonstrate schizoid personality traits; and to report less death anxiety.
Life Stress, Medical Lethality, and Suicidal Intent
TLDR
Although both life stress andGHQ score were significantly correlated with suicidal intent, the GHQ score accounted for a greater proportion of the variance, suggesting a more complex relationship between life stress, age, and suicidal intent than is often assumed.
Cross-Validation of the Suicidal Intent Scale
This study investigated the validity and reliability of the Suicidal Intent Scale as a measure of the seriousness of a suicide attempt. 194 completed suicides had higher scores on the scale than 231

TLDR
Patients with depression or insomnia, plus three or more other high-risk signs—older than 40 years; married; recently separated; widowed, retired, or living alone; middle class; good employment record—should be taken seriously, treated, and hospitalized if necessary.
Assessment of suicidal intention: the Scale for Suicide Ideation.
TLDR
The SSI scale was found to have high internal consistency and moderately high correlations with clinical ratings of suicidal risk and self-administered measures of self-harm, and it was sensitive to changes in levels of depression and hopelessness over time.
