Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) targeting proteinase 3 (PR3) possess a high sensitivity and specificity for Wegener's granulomatosis. Due to their capacity of directly activating neutrophils, a pathogenetic role for these autoantibodies has been proposed.
