We investigate the evolution of a population of 100 dark matter satellites orbiting in the gravitational potential of a realistic model of M31. We find that after 10 Gyr, seven subhalos are completely disrupted by the tidal field of the host galaxy. The remaining satellites suffer heavy mass loss and, overall, 75% of the mass initially in the subhalo system is tidally stripped. Not surprisingly, satellites with pericentric radius less than 30 kpc suffer the greatest stripping and leave a…
Cold Dark Matter Substructure and Galactic Disks. I. Morphological Signatures of Hierarchical Satellite Accretion
We conduct dissipationless N-body simulations to investigate the cumulative effect of substructure impacts onto thin disk galaxies in the context of the ΛCDM paradigm. Our simulation campaign is
Cold Dark Matter Substructure and Galactic Disks
Abstract We perform a set of high-resolution, fully self-consistent dissipationless N-body simulations to investigate the influence of cold dark matter (CDM) substructure on the dynamical evolution
Radial mixing in galactic discs: the effects of disc structure and satellite bombardment
We use a suite of numerical simulations to investigate the mechanisms and effects of radial migration of stars in disc galaxies such as the Milky Way (MW). An isolated, collisionless stellar disc
Disk Evolution and Bar Triggering Driven by Interactions with Dark Matter Substructure
We study formation and evolution of bar-disk systems in fully self-consistent cosmological simulations of galaxy formation in the ΛCDM WMAP3 universe. In a representative model we find that the first
The formation and evolution of Virgo cluster galaxies – II. Stellar populations
We use a combination of deep optical and near-infrared light profiles for a morphologically diverse sample of Virgo cluster galaxies to study the radially resolved stellar populations of cluster
MERGERS AND BULGE FORMATION IN ΛCDM: WHICH MERGERS MATTER?
We use a suite of semi-empirical models to predict the galaxy–galaxy merger rate and relative contributions to bulge growth as a function of mass (both halo and stellar), redshift, and mass ratio.
Stellar discs in Aquarius dark matter haloes
We investigate the gravitational interactions between live stellar disks and their dark matter halos, using CDM haloes similar in mass to that of the Milky Way taken from the Aquarius Project. We
THE DESTRUCTION OF THIN STELLAR DISKS VIA COSMOLOGICALLY COMMON SATELLITE ACCRETION EVENTS
Most Galaxy-sized systems (Mhost ≃ 1012 M☉) in the ΛCDM cosmology are expected to have interacted with at least one satellite with a total mass Msat ≃ 1011 M☉ ≃ 3Mdisk in the past 8 Gyr. Analytic and
The stability of stellar discs in Milky Way-sized dark matter haloes
We employ an improved methodology to insert live stellar disks into high-resolution dark matter simulations of Milky Way sized halos, allowing us to investigate the fate of thin stellar disks in the
ON THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TIDAL STIRRING MECHANISM FOR THE ORIGIN OF DWARF SPHEROIDALS: DEPENDENCE ON THE ORBITAL AND STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS OF THE PROGENITOR DISKY DWARFS
The tidal stirring model posits the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) via the tidal interactions between late-type, rotationally supported dwarfs and Milky-Way-sized host galaxies. Using

The Structural Evolution of Substructure
We investigate the evolution of substructure in cold dark matter (CDM) halos using N-body simulations of tidal stripping of substructure halos within a static host potential. We find that halos
Tracing Galaxy Formation with Stellar Halos. I. Methods
If the favored hierarchical cosmological model is correct, then the Milky Way system should have accreted ~100-200 luminous satellite galaxies in the past ~12 Gyr. We model this process using a
Orbital parameters of infalling dark matter substructures
We present distributions of the orbital parameters of dark matter substructures at the time of merging into their host halo. Accurate knowledge of the orbits of dark matter substructures is a crucial
Heating of galactic discs by infalling satellites
We develop an analytic model to calculate the rate at which galaxy discs are heated by dark matter substructures orbiting in their haloes. The model takes into account the internal structure, mass
Velocity and spatial biases in cold dark matter subhalo distributions
We present a statistical study of substructure within a sample ofCDM clusters and galaxies simulated with up to 25 million particles. With thousands of subhalos per object we can accurately measure
Quantifying the Fragility of Galactic Disks in Minor Mergers
We perform fully self-consistent stellar dynamical simulations of the accretion of a companion ("satellite") galaxy by a large disk galaxy to investigate the interaction between the disk, halo, and
Stars beyond galaxies: the origin of extended luminous haloes around galaxies
We use numerical simulations to investigate the origin and structure of the luminous haloes that surround isolated galaxies. These stellar structures extend out to several hundred kpc away from a
Intracluster Stellar Population Properties from N-Body Cosmological Simulations. I. Constraints at z = 0
We use a high-resolution collisionless simulation of a Virgo-like cluster in a ΛCDM cosmology to determine the velocity and clustering properties of the diffuse stellar component in the intracluster

A Merger Origin for X Structures in S0 Galaxies
Using numerical simulation, we study the response of a disk galaxy to a merger involving a low-mass satellite companion. During a prograde satellite accretion, the disk galaxy forms a strong bar in
