The specialized functions of neocortical areas depend on patterned innervation from the thalamus. Recent evidence suggests several key molecules for correct connections of thalamocortical axons (TCAs) between specific thalamic nuclei and cortical areas. First, the correct area map has to be generated in cortex, and thalamic nuclei need to be specified in correct patterns.
