SummaryEmbryos of 171 Drosophila lines carrying a P-lacZ insertion on the second or third chromosome were analyzed regarding their pattern of lacZ expression. All lines were selected from a larger screen of about 4000 lines (Bier et al. 1989). Tissue specificity and time of onset of lacZ expression was documented for each line. Thereby, a comprehensive list of markers for the various tissue and cell types of the Drosophila embryo could be assembled. With the help of several P-lacZ lines the…
Spatial and Temporal Control of Gene Expression in Drosophila Using the Inducible GeneSwitch GAL4 System. I. Screen for Larval Nervous System Drivers
TLDR
To improve the utility of the GeneSwitch GAL4 system of Drosophila, a large-scale enhancer-trap screen for insertions that yielded nervous system expression was performed and revealed novel patterns of sensory neurons, interneurons, and glia.
Novel behavioral and developmental defects associated with Drosophila single-minded.
TLDR
A new temperature-sensitive sim allele allowed an assessment of possible postembryonic function(s) of sim and indicated that most mutant sim flies were only able to walk in circles, likely due to defects in the brain central complex.
Embryonic origin of the imaginal discs of the head of Drosophila melanogaster
The embryonic development of the primordia of the Drosophila head was studied by using an enhancer trap line expressed in these structures from embryonic stage 13 onward. Particular attention was
Novel tissue units of regional differentiation in the gut epithelium of Drosopbila, as revealed by P-element-mediated detection of enhancer
We analysed spatial patterns of expression of a lacZ reporter gene in the gut of Drosophila larvae that had been transformed with a P-element-lacZ vector to identify regional differences in gene
Molecular and cellular analysis of Drosophila melanogaster lovesong
TLDR
Several brain structures were identified that appear to influence song production and ten genes were identifiedThat had mutants with song defects that produced aberrant song.
Unique germ-line organelle, nuage, functions to repress selfish genetic elements in Drosophila melanogaster

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
  • 2007
TLDR
The data suggest that the nuage functions as a specialized center that protects the genome in the germ-line cells via gene regulation mediated by repeat-associated small interfering RNAs.
Drosophila glial architecture and development: analysis using a collection of new cell-specific markers
TLDR
These studies suggest that the use of transcription factor binding sites to drive reporter gene expression may prove to be a generally useful means of generating additional cell type-specific markers.
Drosophila hemolectin gene is expressed in embryonic and larval hemocytes and its knock down causes bleeding defects.
TLDR
The data strongly suggest that Hml is involved in hemostasis and/or coagulation in Drosophila larvae.
Allocation and specification of the genital disc precursor cells in Drosophila.
TLDR
It is shown that the genital disc precursor cells (GDPCs) are first detectable during mid-embryogenesis as a 22-cell cluster in the ventral epidermis, and it is demonstrated that at least some of the organization of the larval disc originates as positional information in the embryo, thus providing a context for further studies on the development of the genital Disc.
Development of the genitalia in Drosophila melanogaster.
TLDR
The imaginal discs of Drosophila melanogaster are an excellent material with which to analyze how signaling pathways and Hox genes control growth and pattern formation and the study of the genital disc offers the possibility of integrating the sex determination pathway into this analysis.

Neural enhancer-like elements as specific cell markers in Drosophila.
TLDR
It is proposed that cells in four strains of Drosophila melanogaster carry the transposon P[lac,ry+] at a unique genomic location are precursors of sense organs, implying that theDevelopment of the peripheral nervous system overlaps in time with the development of the central nervous system.
Observations on cell lineage of internal organs of Drosophila.
TLDR
The sdh cell marker is used to map internal organs in mosaics made by nuclear transplantation to confirm that oenocytes arise from the same progenitors as the adult epidermis, but that muscles and fat body have a separate (mesodermal) origin.
A new homeobox-containing gene, msh-2, is transiently expressed early during mesoderm formation of Drosophila.
TLDR
A new homeobox-containing gene, msh-2, is isolated by means of the polymerase chain reactions (PCR) using redundant primers and appears to be dependent on twist function, while H2.0, a homeo-box- containing gene specifically expressed in visceral mesoderm, is not transcribed in the Mesoderm in 93C-F deficiency embryos.
Searching for pattern and mutation in the Drosophila genome with a P-lacZ vector.
TLDR
This type of screen appears to be an effective way to find new loci that may play a role in the development of the Drosophila nervous system.
P-element-mediated enhancer detection: a versatile method to study development in Drosophila.
TLDR
The diversity and complexity of cis-acting regulatory elements in the genome and the general applications of the enhancer detector method for the study of Drosophila development are discussed.

The analysis of the expression of Scr in Antp mutant embryos revealed a case of tissue-specific regulation of ScR expression by Antp, and it is revealed that the visceral mesoderm imposes the constriction on the endoderm and the yolk.
De novo expression of a type IV collagen gene in Drosophila embryos is restricted to mesodermal derivatives and occurs at germ band shortening.
We have examined directly the expression of one collagen gene (DCg1) during Drosophila melanogaster embryogenesis by means of in situ hybridization. Transcripts of this gene, which were demonstrated

SummaryThe pattern of cell proliferation and cell movements inDrosophila embryogenesis has been analysed with the aim of constructing a blastoderm fate map. Post-blastoderm cell proliferation starts
Histological analysis of the dynamics of growth of imaginal discs and histoblast nests during the larval development ofDrosophila melanogaster
TLDR
The histoblasts which are the anlagen of the integument of the adult abdomen do not increase in number from the time of larval hatching until about 5 h after pupation when they begin to divide, and their behaviour contrasts with that of the histoblast of the other dipterans such asCalliphora, Musca andDacus.
The embryonic development of larval muscles in Drosophila.
  • M. Bate
  • Biology, Medicine
    Development
  • 1990
TLDR
Evidence is presented for the view that the development of the larval muscle pattern in Drosophila depends on a prior segregation of founder cells at appropriate locations in the mesoderm with which other cells fuse to form the precursors.
