We explore the possibilty of detecting horizontal electromagnetic showers of tau neutrinos from individual gamma ray bursts, in large scale detectors like HiRes and Telescope Array. We study the role of the parameters of a gamma ray burst in determining the expected number of tau events from that burst. The horizontal beam of tau leptons produce visible signals in the atmosphere. We find that there is a slim chance of observing tau lepton appearances from GRBs with Telescope Array. The number… Expand

Prospect of determining the Dirac/Majorana state of the neutrino by a Multi-OWL experiment
We consider the non-radiative two-body decay of a neutrino to a daughter neutrino with degraded energy and a very light particle (Majoron). Ultrahigh-energy neutrinos from an astrophysical sourceExpand
Neutrino detection with inclined air showers
The possibilities of detecting high-energy neutrinos through inclined showers produced in the atmosphere are addressed with an emphasis on the detection of air showers by arrays of particleExpand
INTRINSIC AND OSCILLATED ASTROPHYSICAL NEUTRINO FLAVOR RATIOS REVISITED
The pp interactions taking place in the cosmos around us are a source of the astrophysical neutrinos of all the three flavors. In these interactions, the electron and the muon neutrinos mainly comeExpand

The appearance of tau neutrinos from a Gamma Ray Burst
Abstract The muon neutrinos from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) during their propagation oscillate to tau neutrinos. The tau neutrinos can be identified by the appearance of tau leptons, which decay toExpand
On the neutrino flux from Gamma Ray Bursts: an overview
Observations imply that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a highly relativistic fireball. Photo-meson interactions of protons with gamma-rays within theExpand
Tau neutrinos in the Auger Observatory: a new window to UHECR sources
Abstract The cosmic ray spectrum has been shown to extend well beyond 10 20 eV. With nearly 20 events observed in the last 40 years, it is now established that particles are accelerated or producedExpand
HIGH ENERGY NEUTRINOS FROM COSMOLOGICAL GAMMA-RAY BURST FIREBALLS
Observations suggest that {gamma}-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a relativistic fireball. We show that a large fraction, {ge}10{percent}, of the fireballExpand
Gamma-ray bursts as the death throes of massive binary stars
We propose that gamma-ray bursts are created in the mergers of double neutron star binaries and black hole neutron star binaries at cosmological distances. Two different processes provide theExpand
Nucleosynthesis, neutrino bursts and γ-rays from coalescing neutron stars
NEUTRON-STAR collisions occur inevitably when binary neutron stars spiral into each other as a result of damping of gravitational radiation. Such collisions will produce a characteristic burst ofExpand
On the Generation of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays in Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Reappraisal
We reexamine critically the arguments raised against the theory that ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) observed at Earth are produced in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). These include the limitations toExpand
Discovering Ultra-High-Energy Neutrinos through Horizontal and Upward τ Air Showers: Evidence in Terrestrial Gamma Flashes?
Ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos ντ, τ, and e at PeV and higher energies may induce τ air showers whose detectability is amplified millions to billions of times by their secondaries. We consideredExpand
BEAMING IN GAMMA-RAY BURSTS: EVIDENCE FOR A STANDARD ENERGY RESERVOIR
We present a comprehensive sample of all gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows with known distances, and we derive their conical opening angles based on observed broadband breaks in their light curves.Expand
Helium Star/Black Hole Mergers: A New Gamma-Ray Burst Model
We present a model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in which a stellar mass black hole acquires a massive accretion disk by merging with the helium core of its red giant companion. The black hole entersExpand
