Studies on the oxidation-reduction potentials of hemoglobin were initiated by Conant (1) with Fieser (2), Scott (3), and Pappenheimer (4), who showed that the system was thermodynamically reversible, and explored the relation of E&l to pH. Since the hemoglobin system is electromotively sluggish, a great advance was made with the introduction by Taylor and Hastings (5) of electromotively active mediators which permit the rapid attainment of a true equilibrium at the platinum electrode.
