This paper presents an analysis of the carotenoids of the brown trout (Salmo trutta Linn.), being the first of a series designed to throw light on the general functions of this class of pigments in animals. Apart from the role of the carotenoid derivative vitamin A as a component of visual purple, and the importance of some carotenes as vitamin A precursors, precise knowledge is almost entirely lacking of the part played by this group of substances in any metabolic process.
