We present a radial velocity study of the triple-lined system Gliese 644 and derive spectroscopic elements for the inner and outer orbits with periods of 2.965 5 and 627 d. We also utilize old visual data, as well as modern speckle and adaptive optics observations, to derive a new astrometric solution for the outer orbit. These two orbits together allow us to derive masses for each of the three components in the system: MA=0.410±0.028 (6.9 per cent), MBa=0.336±0.016 (4.7 per cent), and MBb=0…

A Survey of Proper-Motion Stars. XV. Orbital Solutions for 34 Double-lined Spectroscopic Binaries*

We present orbital solutions for 34 double-lined spectroscopic binaries found in the Carney-Latham sample of 1464 stars selected for high proper motion. We use TODCOR, a two-dimensional correlation

The M-dwarfs in Multiples (MinMs) survey – I. Stellar multiplicity among low-mass stars within 15 pc

We present a large-scale, volume-limited companion survey of 245 late-K to mid-M (K7-M6) dwarfs within 15 pc. Infrared adaptive optics (AO) data were analysed from the Very Large Telescope, Subaru

On the properties of young multiple stars

We present numerical results on the properties of young binary and multiple stellar systems. Our analysis is based on a series of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) +N-body simulations of the

Southern Very Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in Wide Binary and Multiple Systems

The results of the Königstuhl survey in the Southern Hemisphere are presented. I have searched for common proper motion companions to 173 field very low mass stars and brown dwarfs with spectral

High Temporal Resolution Spectroscopic Observations of the Flare Star V1054 Oph

We present the results of a high temporal resolution spectroscopic monitoring of the flare (UV Cet type) star V1054 Oph (Wolf 630AB), classified as a dM3.5e visual binary system. Intermediate

Cross-Correlation in Four Dimensions: Application to the Quadruple-lined Spectroscopic System HD 110555

We develop a technique to measure radial velocities of stars from spectra that present four sets of lines. The algorithm is an extension of the two-dimensional cross-correlation method TODCOR to four

The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs

We announce the discovery of two planets orbiting the M dwarfs GJ 251 (0.360 ± 0.015M⊙) and HD 238090 (0.578 ± 0.021M⊙) based on CARMENES radial velocity (RV) data. In addition, we independently

The Relative Emission from Chromospheres and Coronae: Dependence on Spectral Type and Age

Extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray emission from stellar coronae drives mass loss from exoplanet atmospheres, and ultraviolet emission from stellar chromospheres drives photochemistry in exoplanet

Are the orbital poles of binary stars in the solar neighbourhood anisotropically distributed

We test whether or not the orbital poles of the systems in the solar neighbourhood are isotropically distributed on the celestial sphere. The problem is plagued by the ambiguity on the position

Infrared Detection of Low-Mass Secondaries in Spectroscopic Binaries

This paper outlines an infrared spectroscopic technique to measure the radial velocities of faint secondaries in known single-lined binaries. The paper presents our H-band observations with the

Studies of multiple stellar systems — III. Modulation of orbital elements in the triple-lined system HD 109648

The triple-lined spectroscopic triple system HD 109648 has one of the shortest periods known for the outer orbit in a late-type triple, 120.5 d, and the ratio between the periods of the outer and the

New spectroscopic components in six multiple systems

New close sub-systems are discovered in 8 visual late-type double stars. Elements of spectroscopic orbits (4 double-lined and 4 single-lined) are given for the components of quadruple systems ADS

Multiple Stellar Systems

A spectroscopic survey of visual binaries with known orbital elements has been carried out with the radial velocity scanner CORAVEL at the Haute-Provence Observatory, since 1977, (Baranne, Mayor,

The Optical Mass-Luminosity Relation at the End of the Main Sequence (0.08-0.20 M☉)

The empirical mass-luminosity relation at M is presented for stars with masses 0.08-0.20 M☉ based upon new observations made with Fine Guidance Sensor 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The targets are

Studies of multiple stellar systems – I. The halo star G38-13

We report the discovery of the spectroscopic triple system G38-13. Its outer orbit has one of the shortest known periods, 645 d, for a late-type triple system. The shortness of the outer period, and

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars

The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars of multiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbital periods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated

Interferometric Astrometry of the Low-Mass Binary Gl 791.2 (= HU Del) Using HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE Fine Guidance Sensor 3: Parallax and Component Masses

With fourteen epochs of fringe-tracking data spanning 1.7 yr from Fine Guidance Sensor 3 we have obtained a parallax (πabs = 113.1 ± 0.3 mas) and perturbation orbit for Gl 791.2A. Contemporaneous

The solar neighborhood, 1: Standard spectral types (K5-M8) for northern dwarfs within eight parsecs

Spectral types on a standard system are presented for late-type dwarfs within 8 pc. All known main-sequence stars north of -25 deg and with M(sub V) greater than or = 8.00 have been observed,

Predicting the properties of binary stellar systems: the evolution of accreting protobinary systems

We investigate the formation of binary stellar systems. We consider a model where a ‘seed’ protobinary system forms, via fragmentation, within a collapsing molecular cloud core and evolves to its

The High Eccentricity of the Planet Orbiting 16 Cygni B

We consider the high eccentricity, 0.63, of the newly discovered planet orbiting 16 Cyg B, using the fact that the parent star is part of a wide binary. We show that the high eccentricity of the
