The glycerol teichoic acids were first detected as impurities in preparations of ribitol teichoic acids obtained from whole defatted bacteria (Armstrong, Baddiley, Buchanan, Carss & Greenberg, 1958). Later investigations showed that the walls of a number of Gram-positive organisms contain either a ribitol or a glycerol teichoic acid (Armstrong et al. 1959).
