The structure of a gene encoding a 70-kDa heat-shock protein (HSP70) from the unicellular alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, is described. This gene shows a remarkable expression pattern, because it is inducible by light as well as by elevated temperature [von Gromoff et al., Mol. Cell. Biol. 9 (1989) 3911-3918].
