Halorhodopsin from the halophilic archaeon Halobacterium salinarum is a membrane located light-driven chloride pump. Upon illumination Halorhodopsin undergoes a reversible photocycle initiated by the all-trans to 13-cis isomerization of the covalently bound retinal chromophore.
