Motivated by the observation of ferromagnetism in carbon foams, we perform a massive search for (meta)stable disordered structures of elemental carbon by a generate and test approach. We use the density functional based program SIESTA to optimize the structures and calculate the electronic spectra and spin densities. About 1% of the 24,000 optimized structures present magnetic moments, a necessary but not sufficient condition for intrinsic magnetic order. We analyse the results using elements… Expand

Ferromagnetism in semihydrogenated graphene sheet.
Using density functional theory, it is shown that when half of the hydrogen in this graphane sheet is removed, the resulting semihydrogenated graphene becomes a ferromagnetic semiconductor with a small indirect gap. Expand
Dangling bonds and magnetism of grain boundaries in graphene
Grain boundaries with dangling bonds (DBGB) in graphene are studied by atomistic Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations in combination with density functional (SIESTA) calculations. The mostExpand
pi-electron ferromagnetism in metal-free carbon probed by soft x-ray dichroism.
It is demonstrated that the magnetic order in the investigated system originates only from the carbon pi-electron system. Expand
Magnetic carbon
It appears that the high-pressure, high-temperature polymerization process results in a magnetically ordered state of C60, which exhibits features typical of ferromagnets: saturation magnetization, large hysteresis and attachment to a magnet at room temperature. Expand

Electronic and magnetic properties of carbon nanofoam produced by high-repetition-rate laser ablation
Abstract A new form of carbon material, a low-density cluster-assembled carbon nanofoam was produced by high-repetition-rate laser ablation of a glassy carbon target in an ambient non-reactive ArExpand

Magnetic correlations at graphene edges: basis for novel spintronics devices.
A high value for the spin wave stiffness D=2100 meV A2 and a spin-collinear domain wall creation energy E(dw)=114 meV accompanied by low magnetic anisotropy is found and possible ways of increasing the range of magnetic order and effects of edge roughness on it are discussed. Expand
