In order to provide the requisite structural strength for a prosthetic mitral valve, we have analysed the stresses in the in vivo mitral valve leaflets during a cardiac cycle. The valve cusps of the mitral valve are analysed as two semi-circular membranes held along the circular (fibrous valve ring) edge and supported along the straight edge (by the chordea tendinae).
