Ovulation in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is regulated by complex signal transduction pathways and cell-cell interactions. Myoepithelial sheath cells of the proximal ovary are smooth muscle-like cells that provide contractile forces to push a mature oocyte into the spermatheca for fertilization.
