The pyrH gene encoding uridylate kinase (UMPK) from the extreme thermoacidophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the enzyme (SsUMPK) was purified. Size exclusion chromatography and sedimentation experiments showed that the oligomeric state in solution is hexameric.
