This is the written version of a set of introductory lectures to string theory‡. IFT-UAM/CSIC-98-2 September 1998 e-mail: enrique.alvarez@uam.es e-mail: patrick.meessen@uam.es The lectures were given at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in the semester 1997/98 and at the VI Escuela de Otoño de F́ısica Teórica, held in Santiago de Compostela (10-23 september 1998).

Renormalized Kaluza-Klein theories
Using six-dimensional quantum electrodynamics ($QED_6$) as an example we study the one-loop renormalization of the theory both from the six and four-dimensional points of view. Our main conclusion is
Renormalized Kaluza-Klein theories II. $QED_4$ on a two-torus
Using four-dimensional quantum electrodynamics in a two-torus as an example we show that the mode expansion of the renormalized theory is not equivalent to the renormalization of the mode expansion.
Ultraviolet divergences in Higher-Dimensional Field Theories
El origen de la simetr??as gauge es uno de los mayores misterios de la f??sica de part??culas. La idea de Theodor Kaluza, desarrollada por Oskar Klein en los a?nos veinte (v?ease por ejemplo [1] y
Bottom up approach to Quantum Gravity
A general introduction is given to what can be predicated about quantum gravity once the lessons from the standard model of particle physics are taken into account. In particular, the effective
SUSY at the LHC
I discuss part of the program of work towards discoveries at the LHC with seeds for orientation and navigation in the parameter space given an anticipated multitude of excesses at start-up.
Induced gravity on intersecting branes
We establish Einstein-Hilbert gravity couplings in the effective action for Intersecting Brane Worlds. The four-dimensional induced Planck mass is determined by calculating graviton scattering

TASI Lectures on Perturbative String Theories
These lecture notes are based on a course on string theories given by Hirosi Ooguri in the first week of TASI 96 Summer School at Boulder, Colorado. It is an introductory course designed to provide
Lectures on string theory
This book provides an introduction to string theory, at present one of the fastest-growing areas in theoretical high-energy physics. It introduces modern techniques and concepts, such as conformal
Introduction to non-perturbative string theory
These are a set of lectures presented at the CERN-La Plata-Santiago de Compostella School of Physics, La Plata, May 1997. A brief introduction to the non-perturbative structure of string theory is
Supersymmetry and String Theory
The past decade has witnessed dramatic developments in the fields of experimental and theoretical particle physics and cosmology. This Second Edition is a comprehensive introduction to these recent
The Geometry of String Perturbation Theory
This paper is devoted to recent progress made towards the understanding of closed bosonic and fermionic string perturbation theory, formulated in a Lorentz-covariant way on Euclidean space-time.
