To determine useful metrics for assessing stream water quality in the Southeastern Coastal Plain, we examined differences among two buffered and three unbuffered streams in an agricultural landscape in southwestern Georgia. Potential indicators included amphibian diversity and abundance, aquatic macroinvertebrate populations, riparian vegetative structure, water quality, and stream physical parameters. Variability among sites and treatments (buffered vs. unbuffered) existed, with sites in the…

Biological Assessment to Support Ecological Recovery of a Degraded Headwater System

A preliminary restoration strategy involving the addition of pool habitats in the system is suggested, primarily focused on improving the existing macroinvertebrate community in the current context of the system, thereby reducing costs associated with active channel restoration.

Diet and Abundance of Southern Two-lined Salamander Larvae (Eurycea cirrigera) in Streams within an Agricultural Landscape, Southwest Georgia

Analyzing stream reaches within an agricultural landscape in southwestern Georgia for benthic macroinvertebrates and larval amphibians from 2002 to 2003 to determine whether cattle grazing impacts these faunal components found that capture success for larval salamanders was higher at buffered sites.

Relationships Between Landscape Features and Nutrient Concentrations in an Agricultural Watershed in Southwestern Georgia: An Integrated Geographic Information Systems Approach

This study examined the influence of landscape features on stream nutrient concentrations within the Ichawaynochaway Creek watershed in southwestern Georgia. Baseflow concentrations of both dissolved

Forested Riparian Buffers Change the Taxonomic and Functional Composition of Stream Invertebrate Communities in Agricultural Catchments

Riparian zones form the interface between stream and terrestrial ecosystems and play a key role through their vegetation structure in determining stream biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and

Louisiana Waterthrush Density and Productivity in Hemlock-dominated Headwater Streams: The Influence of Stream Morphology

Abstract We assessed the density and productivity of Parkesia motacilla (Louisiana Waterthrush) at 4 Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock)-dominated headwater streams representing 2 distinct stream

Grazing Management Effects on Sediment, Phosphorus, and Pathogen Loading of Streams in Cool‐Season Grass Pastures

Erosion of cut‐banks was the greatest contributor of sediment and P loading to the stream; contributions from surface runoff and grazing animals were considerably less and were minimized by grazing management practices that reduced congregation of cattle by pasture streams.

Assessment of the effectiveness of best management practices for streams draining agricultural landscapes using diatoms and macroinvertebrates

In this study, a bioassessment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of best management practices (BMPs) implemented in farms in the Upper Delaware River watershed, NY (USA). Diatom and

Macroinvertebrate biomonitoring in intermittent coastal plain streams impacted by animal agriculture.

It is indicated that development of a better understanding of invertebrate fauna in reference conditions and of the natural variation in intermittent streams is necessary to develop effective biomonitoring programs for these systems.
