Black root, black rot, or strawberry black root rot were the descriptive names first given for a debilitating root cortical disease of uncertain cause. The disease has been a challenge for strawberry growers for at least a century, and probably longer. Early work in 1917 (Fletcher) described root rot or black root of strawberry and stated that the disease was prevalent in Massachusetts, Michigan, and New York in the years 1902 to 1908.
