AIM Pentose-utilizing yeast development by protoplast fusion and sequential mutations and ethanol fermentation using lignocellulosic substrate. METHODS AND RESULTS Protoplasts of thermotolerant Saccharomyces cerevisiae and mesophilic, xylose-utilizing Candida shehatae were fused by electrofusion.
