This is a complete translation of the Ming dynasty anthology of tales, Gujin Xiaoshuo by Feng Menglong (1574±1646): its alternative title being Yushi Mingyan (Illustrious Words to Instruct the World) and the ®rst in his much vaunted and much copied trilogy, the San Yan (``Three Words'').
