This means, if the card I hold up is showing 4 red circles the students shout out 6. They are looking at the remaining open spaced squares to tell which other number is needed to make a ten! This warm up relates directly into number bonds. When students are fluent in understanding which two numbers make a ten, they are learning the two addition facts and two subtraction facts all at the same time by relating the numbers into the number bond of ten. We love ten and kids are always scrambling to be the first to shout out the friend of ten in each equation. What a strong number sense foundation these students are given! They are in kindergarten and first grade and already solidifying the importance of facts of ten. In their eyes, they are just looking to make friends of ten, playing games, drawing number bonds, and using ten-frame cards. They are having so much fun! Now, this knowledge of making a ten begins to evolve as they progress through Eureka math. In fact, I have seen students that have such a strong sense of making a ten to solve equations, they begin to do it so naturally they remove some of the steps out loud and in writing. They are using mental math with speed and accuracy. This is the goal of creating logical math thinkers and making the best use of our number system.
When students move into regrouping, they are going to easily bounce of off the concept of tens to relate to base tens. This means they are going understand that ten ones bundle to make a ten, then ten tens bundle to make one hundred, ten one hundreds bundle to make one thousand and so on. Keep the fluency of ten alive in your math classroom daily. The opportunities will always arise. Here are some fun classroom games to keep students motivated while practicing Friends of Ten:
