Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a cytokine which is generally produced by mesenchymal cells, has mitogenic, motogenic and morphogenic activities in epithelial cells and it also has tumor-suppressing activities. Induction of HGF production may be involved in organ regeneration, wound healing and embryogenesis.
