The superradiant instability can lead to the generation of extremely dense axion clouds around rotating black holes. We show that, despite the long lifetime of the QCD axion with respect to spontaneous decay into photon pairs, stimulated decay becomes significant above a minimum axion density and leads to extremely bright lasers. The lasing threshold can be attained for axion masses μ≳10^{-8}  eV, which implies superradiant instabilities around spinning primordial black holes with mass ≲0.01… Expand

Axion superradiance in rotating neutron stars
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion boundExpand
Follow-up signals from superradiant instabilities of black hole merger remnants
Superradiant instabilities can trigger the formation of bosonic clouds around rotating black holes. If the bosonic field growth is sufficiently fast, these clouds could form shortly after a binaryExpand
Electromagnetic emission from axionic clouds and the quenching of superradiant instabilities
The nature of dark matter is one of the longest-standing puzzles in science. Axions or axion-like particles are a key possibility, and arise in mechanisms to solve the strong CP problem but also inExpand
Dynamic signatures of black hole binaries with superradiant clouds
Superradiant clouds may develop around a rotating black hole, if there is a bosonic field with Compton wavelength comparable to the size of the black hole. In this paper, we investigate the effectsExpand
Gravitational Waves and Possible Fast Radio Bursts from Axion Clumps
The axion objects such as axion mini-clusters and axion clouds around spinning black holes induce parametric resonances of electromagnetic waves through the axion-photon interaction. In particular,Expand
Dynamical evolution of axion condensates under stimulated decays into photons
Dark matter axion condensates may experience stimulated decays into photon pairs. This effect has been often interpreted as a parametric resonance of photons from the axion-photon coupling, leadingExpand

Probing Axions with Event Horizon Telescope Polarimetric Measurements.
Polarimetric imaging of a supermassive black hole by the Event Horizon Telescope can be used to probe the existence of ultralight bosonic particles, such as axions, and the dimensionless axion-photon coupling c=2πg_{aγ}f_{a} for axions with mass around O(10^{-20})  eV [O( 10^{-17})‬V] and decay constant f_{a}. Can black hole superradiance be induced by galactic plasmas
Abstract Highly spinning Kerr black holes with masses M = 1 – 100 M ⊙ are subject to an efficient superradiant instability in the presence of bosons with masses μ ∼ 10 − 10 – 10 − 12 eV . We observeExpand
Exploring the String Axiverse with Precision Black Hole Physics
It has recently been suggested that the presence of a plenitude of light axions, an Axiverse, is evidence for the extra dimensions of string theory. We discuss the observational consequences of theseExpand
Constraining primordial black-hole bombs through spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background
We consider the imprint of superradiant instabilities of nonevaporating primordial black holes (PBHs) on the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In the radiation dominated era, PBHsExpand
