Steroid hormones and growth promoting factors regulate the expression of a number of genes involved in cellular growth and differentiation. In many cases, cellular proliferation and differentiation-specific pathways are mutually exclusive. As an example for the mechanism of mutual exclusion, transcription factors responsible for pathway-specific gene expression interact with each other.
