The paper by Uno et al. [1] in this issue of the Journal shows that another calcium channel blocker, manidipine, interacts with grapefruit juice and that the interaction is stereoselective. As most of the 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4, it is not surprising that grapefruit juice should inhibit the intestinal metabolism of manidipine. The important scientific implication of this report is the novel finding that the degree of interaction…
The grapefruit: an old wine in a new glass? Metabolic and cardiovascular perspectives

TLDR
It has recently emerged that grapefruit, by virtue of its rich flavonoid content, is beneficial in the management of degenerative diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
The grapefruit: an old wine in a new glass? Metabolic and cardiovascular perspectives

It has recently emerged that grapefruit, by virtue of its rich flavonoid content, is beneficial in the management of degenerative diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
Grape fruit juice improves glycemic index and up-regulates expression of hepatic organic cation transporter protein (OCTI) in the rat
TLDR
The effects of GFJ on glucose tolerance, OCTI expression in the liver and metformin-induced lactic acidosis in normal, non-diabetic in rats, are investigated.
In vivo assessment of herb-drug interactions: possible utility of a pharmacogenetic approach?
TLDR
The pharmacogenetic approach has been used mainly to study drug-drug interactions so there is considerable potential to extend this to the study of herb- drug interactions in vivo.
Population pharmacokinetic analysis of bisoprolol in type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension
TLDR
Routine assessment of renal function should be carried out before the initiation of treatment with bisoprolol in order to individualize the dose and to prevent possible accumulation and adverse drug reactions.
Essentials of Herb-Drug Interactions in the Elderly With Cardiovascular Disease
TLDR
This review addresses concerns in an effort to raise awareness about the use of herbal medicine by the elderly and its potential adverse impact on the efficacy of prescription medications that can increase predisposition to catastrophic events such as major bleeding, inadequate anticoagulation leading to undesired clotting, transplant organ rejection and life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
hiPSC-derived neural stem cells from patients with schizophrenia induce an impaired angiogenesis
TLDR
The results reveal that SZP NSC have an imbalance in the secretion and expression of several angiogenic factors, among them non-canonical neuro-angiogenic guidance factors, and their CM was less effective in inducing migration and angiogenesis both in vitro and in vivo.
Regional variation in use of complementary health approaches by U.S. adults.
TLDR
Estimates of the four most commonly used complementary health approaches among adults aged 18 and over in nine geographic regions are presented, using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey adult alternative medicine supplement.

Effect of grapefruit juice on digoxin pharmacokinetics in humans
TLDR
Whether grapefruit juice alters the bioavailability of digoxin, a P‐glycoprotein substrate, is investigated to determine whether the magnitude of the pharmacokinetic interaction was influenced by P‐ Glycoprotein genetic polymorphism.
Effect of grapefruit juice on the disposition of manidipine enantiomers in healthy subjects.
TLDR
GFJ appears to affect this metabolic disposal of (R)-manidipine to a greater extent than that of (S)-manIDipine, as an inhibitor of CYP3A4 in the small intestine.
Food–drug interaction: grapefruit juice augments drug bioavailability—mechanism, extent and relevance
TLDR
It is likely that more information regarding this interaction will accumulate in the future, and awareness of such is necessary for achieving optimal drug therapy, and the data available so far are reviewed in this article.
Grapefruit juice and cimetidine inhibit stereoselective metabolism of nitrendipine in humans
TLDR
There were no consistent effects on blood pressure with all treatments, but in most subjects there was a small temporary increase in heart rate after intake of nitrendipine, and cimetidine did not affect these hemodynamic parameters and did not cause additional adverse effects.
Effects of grapefruit juice on the stereoselective disposition of nicardipine in humans: evidence for dominant presystemic elimination at the gut site
TLDR
It is concluded that the gut is the major presystemic disposal site of racemic nicardipine in humans, with an early postdose transient tachycardia after the oral dosing of racemia nicardine.
Grapefruit juice-drug interactions.
TLDR
In vitro findings support the flavonoid, naringin, or the furanocoumarin, 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin, as being active ingredients, but a recent investigation indicated that neither of these substances made a major contribution to grapefruit juice-drug interactions in humans.
Interaction of citrus juices with felodipine and nifedipine
TLDR
Six men with borderline hypertension took felodipine 5 mg with water, grapefruit juice, or orange juice; the bioavailability with grapefruit Juice was lower, diastolic blood pressure lower, and heart rate higher with Grapefruit juice than with water.
Amlodipine and grapefruit juice.
TLDR
It might be concluded that the possible interaction between grapefruit juice and amlodipine cannot be neglected in the clinical setting even though this interaction does not seem to be of great clinical significance in studies performed on healthy volunteers.
Grapefruits and drugs: when is statistically significant clinically significant?

TLDR
It is conclusively demonstrated that an important component of grapefruit juice–mediated decrease in oral clearance of CYP3A drug substrates is a posttranscrip-tional decrease in the amount of small intestinal CYP2A enzyme.
