Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for more than 0.6 million stars in the interacting galaxies NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 of the M51 system. Stars of various ages have been identified on the constructed Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: blue and red supergiants, AGB stars, and red giants. The distance to M51 has been measured from the position of the tip of the red giant branch, D = 9.9 ± 0.7 Mpc. We have determined the change in the metallicity…
Using infrared imaging from the Herschel Space Observatory, observed as part of the Very Nearby Galaxies Survey, we investigate the spatially resolved dust properties of the interacting Whirlpool
The Distance to the Giant Elliptical Galaxy M87 and the Size of Its Stellar Subsystem
Stellar photometry in nine fields around the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the Virgo cluster is obtained from archival images of the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting Hertzsprung-Russell
Distance to the Dorado Group
Based on the archival images of the Hubble Space Telescope, stellar photometry of the brightest galaxies of the Dorado group: NGC 1433, NGC 1533, NGC 1566 and NGC 1672 was carried out. Red giants
Stellar and dust SED modelling of the Whirlpool interacting galaxy system
Abstract Some 300-500 Myr ago, the Whirlpool galaxy (NGC 5194/M51a) and its nearby post-starburst galaxy neighbour, NGC 5195/M51b closely interacted, resulting in significant changes to their star
Instability analysis for spiral arms of local galaxies: M51, NGC 3627, and NGC 628
We investigate dynamical states of grand-design spiral arms in three local galaxies: M51, NGC3627 and NGC628. Based on linear perturbation analysis consideringmultiple components in the galaxies, we
Enhancement of M51 Image to Extract the Spectral Features for Classification of Stars Using HR Diagram
The Hertzsprung Russell (HR) Diagram is one of the most important tools to study stellar evolution and classification. Messier 51 (M51) is a whirlpool galaxy located 25–35 million light years away.
H II Region Luminosity Function of the Interacting Galaxy M51
We present a study of H ii regions in M51 using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images taken as part of the Hubble Heritage Program. We have cataloged about 19,600 H ii regions
The evolution of interacting spiral galaxy NGC 5194
NGC 5194 (M51a) is a grand-design spiral galaxy and undergoing interactions with its companion. Here, we focus on investigating main properties of its star formation history (SFH) by constructing a
Stellar masses of galaxies are frequently obtained by fitting stellar population synthesis models to galaxy photometry or spectra. The state of the art method resolves spatial structures within a
The resolved star formation history of M51a through successive Bayesian marginalization
We have obtained the time and space-resolved star formation history (SFH) of M51a (NGC 5194) by fitting GALEX, SDSS, and near infrared pixel-by-pixel photometry to a comprehensive library of stellar

Thick disks and halos of spiral galaxies M 81, NGC 55 and NGC 300
By using images from the HST/WFPC2/ACS archive, we have analyzed the spatial distribution of the AGB and RGB stars along the galactocentric radius of nearby spiral galaxies M 81, NGC 300 and NGC 55.
Stellar structure of irregular galaxies: Edge-on galaxies
Stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope is used to study the distributions of the number densities of stars of various ages in 12 irregular and dwarf spiral galaxies viewed
Ongoing massive star formation in the bulge of M51
We present a study of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations of the inner kiloparsec of the interacting galaxy M51 in six bands from 2550 to 8140 Å. The images show an
Properties of Resolved Star Clusters in M51
We present a study of compact star clusters in the nearby pair of interacting galaxies NGC 5194/5195 (M51), based on multifilter Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 archival images. We have detected
Chemical abundances in the inner 5 kpc of the galactic disk
High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectral data are presented for four young B-type stars lying towards the Galactic Centre. Determination of their atmospheric parameters from their absorption
Rotation curves and metallicity gradients from HII regions in spiral galaxies
In this paper we study long slit spectra in the region of H emission line of a sample of 111 spiral galaxies with recognizable and well defined spiral morphology and with a well determined
Clusters in the inner spiral arms of M 51: The cluster IMF and the formation history
We present the results of an analysis of the HST-WFPC2 observations of the interacting galaxy M51. From the observations in 5 broadband filters (UBVRI) and two narrowband filters (Hα and (OIII)) we
Planetary Nebulae as Standard Candles. XI. Application to Spiral Galaxies
We report the results of an [O III] λ5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PNs) in three spiral galaxies: M101 (NGC 5457), M51 (NGC 5194/5195), and M96 (NGC 3368). By comparing on-band/off-band [O III]
Diffuse Ionized Gas in M51/NGC 5195 and M81
We present deep Hα and [S II] emission-line images of three galaxies, the Sab spiral M81, the Sc spiral M51, and its companion, NGC 5195, in our ongoing study of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in
H II regions and the abundance properties of spiral galaxies
We investigate the relationships between the characteristic oxygen abundance, the radial abundance gradient, and the macroscopic properties of spiral galaxies by examining the properties of
