Abstract. We investigate the dynamics of football matches. Our goal is to characterize statistically the temporal sequence of ball movements in this collective sport game, searching for traits of complex behavior. Data were collected over a variety of matches in South American, European and World championships throughout 2005 and 2006. We show that the statistics of ball touches presents power-law tails and can be described by q-gamma distributions. To explain such behavior we propose a model… Expand
Emergence of self-similarity in football dynamics
The multiplayer dynamics of a football game is analyzed to unveil self-similarities in the time evolution of player and ball positioning. Temporal fluctuations in both the team-turf boundary and theExpand
Statistical properties of position-dependent ball-passing networks in football games
Statistical properties of position-dependent ball-passing networks in real football games are examined. We find that the networks have the small-world property, and their degree distributions areExpand
Timescales for exploratory tactical behaviour in football small-sided games
The manipulation of numerical imbalance on the timescale of a few tens of seconds, on which the exploratory behaviour of players saturates, may help coaches to optimise the exploratories efficiency of the small-sided games. Expand
Statistical properties for directional alignment and chasing of players in football games
Focusing on motion of two interacting players in football games, two velocity vectors for the pair of one player and the nearest opponent player exhibit strong alignment. Especially, we find thatExpand
Dynamics of tournaments: the soccer case
A random walk-like model is considered to discuss statistical aspects of tournaments. The model is applied to soccer leagues with emphasis on the scores. This competitive system was computationallyExpand
Degree Distribution of Position-Dependent Ball-Passing Networks in Football Games
We propose a simple stochastic model describing the position-dependent ball-passing network in football (soccer) games. In this network, a player in a certain area in a divided field is a node, and aExpand
Basketball scoring in NBA games: An example of complexity
This work analyzed all the games of the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 NBA regular seasons and studied the evolution of the scoring and the time intervals between points to suggest that there are phase transitions where the dynamic scoring of the games varies significantly. Expand
Kinetic Energy Analysis for Soccer Players and Soccer Matches
A simple and practical semi-empirical formula for the calculation of the Mean Specific Kinetic Energy (MSKE) of a soccer player over a match is developed based on the statistical analysis of theExpand
Overview of complex systems in sport
The complex systems approach offers an opportunity to replace the extant pre-dominant mechanistic view on sport-related phenomena and the applications of complexity principles, and the use of nonlinear dynamics mathematical tools propose a deep change in sport science. Expand
Mathematical Analysis of a Soccer Game. Part I: Individual and Collective Behaviors
The results would offer the raw materials for various potential indicators which may eventually be used in the coaching process to enhance the performance and in the prediction of the results of soccer matches. Expand

A State-Space Model for National Football League Scores
A predictive model for National Football League game scores using data from the period 1988–1993 is developed to obtain plausible inferences concerning team strengths and other model parameters, and to predict future game outcomes. Expand
Regularities in football goal distributions
Besides complexities concerning football championships, some regularities are identified in them. These regularities refer to goal distributions by goal-players and by games. In particular, the goalExpand
Temporal pattern analysis and its applicability in sport: an explanation and exemplar data
The results from soccer suggest that it is possible to identify new profiles for both individuals and teams based on the analysis of temporal behavioural patterns detected within the performances. Expand
Complex network study of Brazilian soccer players.
This paper studies soccer from a complex network point of view, considering a bipartite network with two kinds of vertices or nodes: the soccer players and the clubs and shows that for this network the degree distribution decays exponentially. Expand
On the emergence of a generalised Gamma distribution. Application to traded volume in financial markets
This manuscript reports a stochastic dynamical scenario whose associated stationary probability density function is exactly a previously proposed one to adjust high-frequency traded volumeExpand
From time series to superstatistics.
This work describes how to proceed from a given experimental time series to a superstatistical description and illustrates the approach by applying it to velocity time series measured in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, which is well described by log-normal superstatistics and exhibits clear time scale separation. Expand
Possible generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics
With the use of a quantity normally scaled in multifractals, a generalized form is postulated for entropy, namelySq ≡k [1 – ∑i=1W piq]/(q-1), whereq∈ℝ characterizes the generalization andpi are theExpand
A new look at the statistical model identification
The history of the development of statistical hypothesis testing in time series analysis is reviewed briefly and it is pointed out that the hypothesis testing procedure is not adequately defined asExpand
Ieee Transactions On Automatic Control, Vol. Ac-2'7, No. 3, June 1982
The structure of dynamic programming naturally lends itself well to distributed computation since it involves calculations that to a great extent can be carried out in parallel. In fact it is trivialExpand
A superstatistical model of metastasis and cancer survival
A superstatistical model for the progression statistics of malignant cancer cells is introduced as a complex nonequilibrium system with several macroscopic pathways and inverse-chi-square distributed parameters of the underlying Poisson processes. Expand
