@article{Maldacena1996StatisticalEO, title={Statistical entropy of near extremal fivebranes}, author={Juan Martin Maldacena}, journal={Nuclear Physics}, year={1996}, volume={477}, pages={168-174} }

Abstract The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of near extremal fivebranes is calculated in terms of a gas of strings living on the fivebrane. These fivebranes can also be viewed as near extremal black holes in five dimensions.

We derive the world-volume theory, the (non)-extremal entropy and background geometry of black holes and black strings constructed out of the NS IIA fivebrane within the framework of matrix theory.…

The long string at the stretched horizon and the entropy of large non-extremal black holes

- Physics
- 2015

A bstractWe discuss how long strings can arise at the stretched horizon and how they can account for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We use the thermal scalar field theory to derive the asymptotic…

We compute the entropy of 5d black holes carrying up to three charges using matrix theory.

The Quantum Entropy in Horowitz-Strominger Black Hole Background

- Physics
- 2000

Using 't Hooft's brick wall model and Newman-Penrose's spinor analysis, the expression of the quantum entropy is derived in the Horowitz-Strominger black hole background. The calculations show us…

The quantum structure of black holes

- Physics
- 2005

We give an elementary review of black holes in string theory. We discuss black hole entropy from string microstates and Hawking radiation from these states. We then review the structure of two-charge…

Compactification of Tensionless String Theories

- Physics
- 1996

We study compactifications of the $N=2$ 6D tensionless string on various complex two-folds down to two-dimensions. In the IR limit they become non-trivial conformal field theories in 2D. Using…

Matrix description of interacting theories in six-dimensions

- Physics
- 1997

We propose descriptions of interacting (2,0) supersymmetric theories without gravity in six dimensions in the infinite momentum frame. They are based on the large $N$ limit of quantum mechanics or…

New Connections Between String Theories

- Physics
- 1989

We consider the R→0 limit of toroidal compactification in various string theories. This leads to new connections between seemingly different string theories: IIA and IIB, open and closed, oriented…

D-brane Approach to Black Hole Quantum Mechanics

- Physics
- 1996

Abstract Strominger and Vafa have used D-brane technology to identify and precisely count the degenerate quantum states responsible for the entropy of certain extremal, BPS-saturated black holes.…

EXTREMAL BLACK HOLES AND ELEMENTARY STRING STATES

- Physics
- 1995

Some of the extremal black hole solutions in string theory have the same quantum numbers as the Bogomol’nyi saturated elementary string states. We explore the possibility that these black holes can…

Some twisted self-dual solutions for the Yang-Mills equations on a hypertorus

- Mathematics

AbstractTheSU(N) Yang-Mills equations are considered in a four-dimensional Euclidean box with periodic boundary conditions (hypertorus). Gauge-invariant twists can be introduced in these boundary…
