Zonal jets in a barotropic setup emerge out of homogeneous turbulence through a flow-forming instability of the homogeneous turbulent state (zonostrophic instability), which occurs as the turbulence intensity increases. This has been demonstrated using the statistical state dynamics (SSD) framework with a closure at second order. Furthermore, it was shown that for small supercriticality the flow-forming instability follows Ginzburg–Landau (G–L) dynamics. Here, the SSD framework is used to…

Structure and Stability of Low Amplitude Jet Equilibria in Barotropic Turbulence

Planetary turbulent flows are observed to self-organize into large scale structures such as zonal jets and coherent vortices. Recently, it was shown that a comprehensive understanding of the

Vertically Sheared Horizontal Flow-Forming Instability in Stratified Turbulence: Analytical Linear Stability Analysis of Statistical State Dynamics Equilibria

Vertically banded zonal jets are frequently observed in weakly or nonrotating stratified turbulence, with the quasi-biennial oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere and the ocean’s equatorial

Vertically Sheared Horizontal Flow-Forming Instability in Stratified Turbulence: Linear Stability Analysis using the Analytical Approach to Statistical State Dynamics

Vertically banded zonal jets are frequently observed in weakly or non-rotating stratified turbulence, with the quasi-biennial oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere and the ocean's equatorial

A Geometric Interpretation of Zonostrophic Instability

The zonostrophic instability that leads to the emergence of zonal jets in barotropic beta-plane turbulence is analyzed through a geometric decomposition of the eddy stress tensor. The stress tensor

Statistical state dynamics of vertically sheared horizontal flows in two-dimensional stratified turbulence

Simulations of strongly stratified turbulence often exhibit coherent large-scale structures called vertically sheared horizontal flows (VSHFs). VSHFs emerge in both two-dimensional (2D) and

Layer Formation in Stably and Unstably Stratified Flows

This thesis investigates the dynamics of layered velocity and buoyancy structures in stably and unstably stratified flows. Geophysical examples of layers in stably stratified turbulence include the

Wave-kinetic approach to zonal-flow dynamics: Recent advances

The basic physics of drift-wave turbulence and zonal flows has long been studied within the framework of the wave-kinetic theory. Recently, this framework has been reexamined from first principles,

Advective structure functions in anisotropic two-dimensional turbulence

Abstract In inertial-range turbulence, structure functions can diagnose transfer or dissipation rates of energy and enstrophy, which are difficult to calculate directly in flows with complex geometry

Linearly forced fluid flow on a rotating sphere

We investigate generalized Navier–Stokes (GNS) equations that couple nonlinear advection with a generic linear instability. This analytically tractable minimal model for fluid flows driven by
