  • The Buddhist Ritual of Water and Land was at the center of controversy in fifteenthcentury Chos?n Korea because it received state sponsorship and royal patronage at a time when the state was attempting to reduce the institutional power of Buddhism. I argue that the seemingly inconsistent acts of the early Chos?n kings derived from their view that the state should uphold the ritual traditions of diverse religions regardless of the validity of their doctrinal claims.
