Ultracold neutrons (UCN) can be stored in suitable bottles and observed for several hundreds of seconds. Therefore UCN can be used to study in detail the fundamental properties of the neutron. A new user facility providing ultracold neutrons for fundamental physics research has been constructed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, the PSI UCN source. Assembly of the facility finished in December 2010 with the first production of ultracold neutrons. Operation approval was received in June 2011. We… Expand

An endoscopic detector for ultracold neutrons
A new versatile detector for ultracold neutrons (UCN) has been built and operated which combines multi-pixel photon counters and GS10 lithium-doped scintillators. Such detectors can be very small andExpand
The MCUCN simulation code for ultracold neutron physics
Abstract Ultracold neutrons (UCN) have very low kinetic energies 0-300 neV, thereby can be stored in specific material or magnetic confinements for many hundreds of seconds. This makes them a veryExpand
Realization of a high-performance laser-based mercury magnetometer for neutron EDM experiments

Measurements of ultracold-neutron lifetimes in solid deuterium.
TLDR
These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time. The spallation target of the ultra-cold neutron source UCN at PSI
A new type of ultra-cold neutron source, based on the spallation process, is scheduled to start operation at PSI in 2008. The UCN source will be operated in a pulsed mode using the 1.2 MW (590 MeV, 2Expand
Solid deuterium source of ultracold neutrons based on a pulsed spallation source
