The chemical and biological studies of the saponins of Marthastwias glacialis L. (Forcipulata, Asteriidae), a very common starfish in the Mediterranean Sea, have continued for a long time. In 1970 Mackie and Turner (1) reported that the steroid glycosides of M. glacialis consist mainly of two components, M, and M,, glycoside M, being the most active in eliciting the avoidance reaction of the mollusk Buccinum u&tum. The same group determined the structures of the principal aglycones obtained by… Expand

TLDR
Saponins, complex water soluble compounds composed of a carbohydrate moiety attached to a steroid or triterpenoid aglycone, have been isolated from a great number of terrestrial plants, but are uncommon animal constituents. Expand

Chemical Constituents and Bioactivities of Starfish
TLDR
The aim of this review is to provide an up‐to‐date review on the chemistry and bioactivity of compounds isolated from all kinds of starfish to illustrate the chemodiversity and biological significance of these constituents, along with their geographical distribution where it is discernible. Expand
