Abstract Early-type galaxies (ETGs) host a hot ISM produced mainly by stellar winds, and heated by Type Ia supernovae and the thermalization of stellar motions. High resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations showed that ordered rotation in the stellar component results in the formation of a centrifugally supported cold equatorial disc. In a recent numerical investigation we found that subsequent generations of stars are formed in this cold disc; this process consumes most of the cold gas… Expand

X-ray haloes and starformation in early-type galaxies
High resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations describing the evolution of the hot ISM in state-of-the-art axisymmetric two-component models of early-type galaxies well reproduced the observed trendsExpand
The effects of galaxy shape and rotation on the X-ray haloes of early-type galaxies – II. Numerical simulations
By means of high resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations, we study the evolution of the hot ISM for a large set of early-type galaxy models, characterized by various degrees of flattening andExpand
The ATLAS3D Project – XXVIII. Dynamically driven star formation suppression in early-type galaxies
We present measurements of the star formation rate (SFR) in the early-type galaxies (ETGs) of the ATLAS 3D sample, based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) 22 µm and Galaxy EvolutionExpand
The ATLAS3D project - XIX. The hot gas content of early-type galaxies: fast versus slow rotators
For early-type galaxies, the ability to sustain a corona of hot, X-ray-emitting gas could have played a key role in quenching their star formation history. A halo of hot gas may act as an effectiveExpand
The ATLAS3D project - X. On the origin of the molecular and ionized gas in early-type galaxies
We make use of interferometric CO and HI observations, and optical integral-field spectroscopy from the ATLAS 3D survey to probe the origin of the molecular and ionised interstellar medium (ISM) inExpand
The ATLAS3D project - XXVI : H I discs in real and simulated fast and slow rotators
One quarter of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) outside Virgo host a disc/ring of H i with size from a few to tens of kpc and mass up to ∼10^9 M_⊙. Here we investigate whether this H i isExpand
