The molecular components of three giant H II regions (NGC 5461, NGC 5462, and NGC 5471) in the galaxy M101 are investigated with new observations from single-dish telescopes (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and the NRAO 12 m) and from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory millimeter array. Of the three H II regions, only NGC 5461 had previously been detected in CO emission. We calculate preliminary values for the molecular mass of the GMCs in NGC 5461 by assuming a CO-to-H2 factor (X factor) and…

Clusters in the Luminous Giant H II Regions in M101
We have obtained HST WFPC2 observations of three very luminous but morphologically different giant H II regions (GHRs) in M101, NGC 5461, NGC 5462, and NGC 5471, in order to study cluster formation
The 100 Myr star formation history of NGC 5471 from cluster and resolved stellar photometry
We show that star formation in the giant H II region NGC?5471 has been ongoing during the past 100 Myr. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 F547M and F675W, ground-based JHK s
Optical Recombination Lines of Heavy Elements in Giant Extragalactic H II Regions
We present high-resolution observations of the giant extragalactic H II regions NGC 604, NGC 2363, NGC 5461, and NGC 5471, based on observations taken with the ISIS spectrograph on the William
The Structure and Star Formation History of NGC 5461
We compute photoionization models for the giant extragalactic H II region NGC 5461 and compare their predictions to several observational constraints. Since we aim to reproduce not only the global
Spatial Distributions of Cold and Warm Interstellar Dust in M101 Resolved with AKARI/Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS)
The nearby face-on spiral galaxy M 101 has been observed with the Far-Infrared Surveyor onboard AKARI. The far-infrared four-band images reveal fine spatial structure so fM 101, which include global
Inhomogeneous reionization of the intergalactic medium regulated by radiative and stellar feedbacks
We study the inhomogeneous reionization in a critical density CDM universe resulting from stellar sources, including Population III objects. The spatial distribution of the sources is obtained from
EMISSION-LINE GALAXIES FROM THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE PROBING EVOLUTION AND REIONIZATION SPECTROSCOPICALLY (PEARS) GRISM SURVEY. I. THE SOUTH FIELDS
We present results of a search for emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in the southern fields of the Hubble Space Telescope Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically (PEARS) grism survey. The
Remote-Controlled Self-Assembly of Three-Dimensional Micro Structures for Ultra-Sensitive Sensors and Three-Dimensional Metamaterials
TLDR
This dissertation presents a meta-modelling system that automates the very labor-intensive and therefore time-heavy and therefore expensive and expensive process of systematically cataloging and cataloging individual neurons in the brain.

The Effect of Star Formation on Molecular Clouds in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies: IC 10 and NGC 6822
We have observed the 12CO J = 2-1 and J = 3-2 lines at a few locations in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. In addition, we have observed the
The Star Formation Histories and Efficiencies of Two Giant H II Regions in M33
$UBV$ photometry is used to re-identify the OB associations which power the two most luminous HII regions in M33, NGC 604 and NGC 595. There is a significant difference (2-3 Myr) in the ages of the
The largest H II regions in M101
Coordinated millimeter, infrared, and ultraviolet observations of the five brightest H II regions in M101 are presented. A CO complex has been found to be associated with NGC 5461 which is much more
The properties of individual giant molecular clouds in M33
A total of 19 fields in the nearby spiral galaxy M33 have been observed by millimeter-wave interferometer at about 30 pc resolution. A total of 38 individual giant molecular clouds (GMCs) were
An HST Study of OB Associations and Star Clusters in M101
The massive stellar content, the OB associations and the star clusters in an HST eld in M101 = NGC 5457 are investigated. A clustering algorithm yields 79 putative associations. Their size
The Density and Temperature of Molecular Clouds in M33
We have observed the 12CO J = 2-1,13CO J = 2-1, and 12CO J = 3-2 lines in a sample of seven giant molecular clouds in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The
THE GALACTIC DISTRIBUTION OF OB ASSOCIATIONS IN MOLECULAR CLOUDS
Molecular clouds account for half of the mass of the interstellar medium interior to the solar circle and for all current star formation. Using cloud catalogs of two CO surveys of the first quadrant,
